When making an actual Hondo Ohnaka shirt, I recommend getting 2 yards of each of the two patterns, in the least expensive fabric you feel comfortable in. The pattern isn't perfect (there's some issue with the joints of the stripe), so I wouldn't use it for any cosplay contests, but for more casual use it should be fine.
