About the Design

The Buzz Saw ghost shark Helicoprion dominated the ancient oceans in the Permian period 275 million

years ago. This is Ray Troll's homage.

In the spring of 1993 I saw a fossil in the basement of the Los Angles Museum of Natural History that changed the course of my life. It was a beautiful coil of shark teeth from an ancient shark called Helicoprion and I soon became obsessed with solving the mystery surrounding this enigmatic creature. This design depicts the dilemma of those of us who have been obsessed with solving the wonderful mystery surrounding these beautiful fossilized spirals. In 2013 I worked with a team of scientists led by Leif Tapanila and Jesse Pruitt that proved once and for all that the whorl was located in the lower jaw.
