I always visualize a slate with writing when I think of the late 18th early 19th century. I don't know if it's the women's learning patrimonial legacy, the natural slate or the richness of literature but that's what I came up with for Jane Austen contest. It's meant to be a fat quarter of a pillow or a quilt. :)
