As I was researching Chinese paper cutting designs, I read that they're often used to decorate doors and windows, and so are often called "Window Flower," chuÄng huÄ" (窗花). It reminds me of when I was a kid, we had a family friend who made traditional Dutch-style crocheted decorations that we hung in our windows. They looked like lacy flowers or snowflakes, very much like these cut paper designs.
