About the Design

I've always been fascinated by Chinese umbrellas. My Gran had a couple when I was small & I

thought they were treasures beyond compare. (large scale)

This is the signature design for my 'umbrellievable' collection. There are two smaller scale versions of this design: 4"/10cm wide umbrellas (http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/3566203) and 2&1/2 " or 6.5cm wide umbrellas (http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/3589898). You can find the rest of the collection here. (http://www.spoonflower.com/collections/100611) The word "umbrella" comes from the Latin root word "umbra", meaning shade or shadow. China is believed to be the home of the umbrella (where the Mandarin word for them is yǔ sǎn). Originally made from silk and considered works of art, they were soon made also from waxed paper, which was surprisingly effective at keeping off rain, as well as sun. Red and yellow umbrellas were used by royalty, while the common people could only have blue umbrellas. This design can be further resized to meet your specific project needs. I can even put a variety of designs together on a yard. Please see the umbrellievable collection (http://www.spoonflower.com/collections/100611) to see the coordinates and fat quarter variations on a yard that are already available. If you would prefer a different combination, just drop me a line – I promise to get back to you quickly! bippidii boppidii designs may be used for making items for resale. Where possible please credit bippidii boppidii as the designer and a link back to my Spoonflower shop would be much appreciated. © bippidii boppidii/Robyn McLean.
